BMC Encores! brings you a healing dose of hilarious musical therapy for election fatigue, with our 2016 production of Broadway Takes On Politics on YouTube.
We can already hear the gasps: Isn’t this a ‘not with a ten-foot pole’ subject right now? Well, if you were among the hundreds of lucky people who saw Broadway Takes On Politics four years ago, you’d know why this is one of our most requested cabaret shows. Who wouldn’t love Uncle Sam belting out ‘Of Thee I Sing’ to the Statue of Liberty?
Music director, Scott Henderson, is joined by performers Martha Benedict, Martin Bray, Paul Henderson, Akilah Williams and Jenny Woods, who romp through settings such as political fundraisers, talk shows, rallies, press conferences, debates and, of course, the courtroom. The songs and scenes come from 30+ classic and obscure Broadway shows including Hello Dolly!, Li’l Abner, Barnum, Call Me Madam, Fiorello, Mr. President, Mary Poppins, 1776, and many others. It’s high political humor just when we may need it most.
With costumes by Genny Cohn, choreography by Martin Bray and lighting by Tanner Hansen, this production was recorded at the dress rehearsal on October 4, 2016, at The Firehouse Performing Arts Center. Enjoy it again or for the first time!!!
