October’s Tempting Menu Selections!

Following delicious French fare for piano four hands in September, Concerts à la Carte continue with BMC’s trademark eclectic offerings! Did you notice? Our fall programs with professional musicians mirror our High School Student Competitions: Piano, Voice, Strings, and Winds! Check out the full menu here!

In October, we welcome soprano Ibidunni Ojikutu, a BMC award winner who is making a name for herself in the world of opera, art song, music theater, and spirituals. Focusing on American women composers, her program is anchored by B.E. Boykin’s song set, Moments of Sonder, using Maya Angelou’s poems. Ibidunni and pianist Rebecca Mañalac will also explore the words of the wives of Henry VIII (via Libby Larsen’s Try Me, Good King), Harriet Tubman’s journey from Araminta to Moses The Liberator (via Nkeiru Okoye’s Songs of Harriet Tubman), and various works by Florence Price. Wednesday, October 5, 10:30am at Trinity Lutheran, and Friday, October 7, 7:30pm at First Congregational Church. Free and all are welcome. Donations are gratefully accepted. Matinee offerings benefit our student awards. We suggest a $20 donation at Night Beat; students are always free.

Then, join us for a special Night Beat in the afternoon when internationally acclaimed cellist, Elinor Frey, plays early music of the 17th and 18th centuries from Northern Italy. Her performance is on Sunday, October 16, 3pm at the Squalicum Boathouse on Zuanich Point (Bellingham Harbor).  Free for all students; $20 suggested donation for others.

Ms. Frey also offers a master class on Monday, October 17 at Bellingham High School between 4 and 6:30pm in the orchestra room (#184). All are invited to come and hear talented local students work on early music repertoire. Free.
