Looking Back – Looking Forward

When we announced our 108th concert season last August, and titled it “Sounds Sublime,” we anticipated something special. Now, half-way through our season schedule, the anticipation has been joyfully fulfilled – and then some.

Reflect with me on the sublime music we’ve already experienced. In September, the acclaimed pianist Jacques Després gave us his exquisite Debussy and Brahms interpretations. This was followed in October by eclectic and rarely-heard gems from the soprano repertoire, presented beautifully by Diane Johnson, with pianist and composer, Rick Asher.

Then, November warmed up with Latinissimo!, sparkling with sunny music from the Latin American and Spanish cultures. Our tour guide and soloist was violinist Grant Donnellan, collaborating with his friends, pianist Judith Widrig, and guitarists David Feingold and Eli Schille-Hudson.

And just last week, December’s musical gift was the Clearbrook Dixie Band (a local treasure for almost 40 years!). This exuberant team of versatile musicians took us back through the years between 1893 and 1947, with more than a dozen beloved songs of the period. Nostalgia and pure fun can also be sublime, when performed with such brilliance.

We still have the second half of our “Sounds Sublime!” season starting in February! We open on February 7 with Musical Stories, featuring violinist Carolyn Canfield and pianist Judith Widrig. March, April and May will be a season highlight, with winners from our high school and WWU Student Awards Competitions. To close the season in June, we have a special appearance by the Fifth Inversion Woodwinds, with flutist Lisa McCarthy.

Now in my second year as BMC’s president, I see every day how much effort goes into making these concerts and the student award programs a success! A big thank-you to all the volunteers who help organize and coordinate activities and events, making sure musicians have what they need, communicate with members and the public, and are there to greet people upon arrival. You are so appreciated! Board members, Program and Award Committee members, behind-the-scene volunteers, you all contribute to BMC’s success!

Finally, and this is a big one, a huge thank you for supporting BMC with your membership and donations! The outstanding programming and support of students is completely due to your generosity. Your donations make it all happen every year and if you are able, please consider an additional year-end, tax-deductible gift – BMC will put it to good use! You can send your gift to BMC, P.O. Box 193, Bellingham, WA 98227, or give online securely.

As we prepare to say farewell to 2023, BMC board members and all volunteers join me in wishing you a peaceful, joyful and safe Holiday Season and a very happy New Year!
